During the semester holiday in 2023, when I was still in seventh grade, my family planned a trip to Lake Toba. It had been a long time since we last traveled together, so I was very excited. I had heard many stories about the beauty of Lake Toba, especially about Samosir Island in the middle of the lake. The idea of visiting one of the largest volcanic lakes in the world made me curious and thrilled. We prepared our bags a day before the trip, making sure everything was ready—from clothes, snacks, and cameras, to jackets because everyone said the weather around Lake Toba could get quite chilly. That night, I could barely sleep because I kept imagining the clear water and beautiful hills I often saw in pictures.

Early in the morning, my family and I left our house. The road to Lake Toba was long, but the scenery along the way made the trip feel less tiring. I looked out the window and saw stretches of green trees, small villages, and mountains in the distance. Sometimes, the road was winding, and I could feel the car tilt slightly as we climbed higher. We made several stops to rest and take pictures because my parents liked capturing beautiful landscapes. I remember buying a popmie from a mini market. It tasted warm and delicious, perfect for the cool morning air.
After hours of traveling, we finally reached the viewpoint area near Lake Toba. The moment I stepped out of the car, the first thing I noticed was the fresh, cold breeze brushing my face. When I looked ahead, I saw the lake spreading wide like a giant mirror reflecting the sky. The water was calm, and the surrounding hills looked majestic. I stood still for a moment, amazed by how beautiful it was. We took many photos there, trying to capture the scenery even though the real view was far more stunning than any picture could show.
Then, we continued our journey to the port to cross to Samosir Island. It was my first time riding a ferry, and I was both nervous and excited. When the ferry moved, I looked down and saw the deep blue water rippling slowly. The wind was colder in the middle of the lake, but the view was wonderful. I saw other ferries passing by, filled with tourists who were also enjoying their holiday. During the ride, I imagined how the lake was formed from a huge volcanic eruption thousands of years ago. The thought made the place feel even more special.
When we arrived at Samosir Island, we visited a traditional Batak village. I saw traditional houses with unique roofs that curved upward like buffalo horns. The locals were friendly, and some of them were preparing cultural performances for the visitors. My family and I explored the area, learning about Batak history and cultural traditions. I even bought a small souvenir—a wooden keychain carved with the word “Samosir.” After that, we walked around the island, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. The trees, the water, and the sound of birds made the island feel calm and refreshing.
Before heading back, we stopped at a small restaurant near the lake. We ate grilled fish, a dish the area was famous for. The taste was amazing—fresh, smoky, and seasoned just right. While eating, I kept staring at the view of the lake outside the window. I felt grateful to be there at that moment.

At the end of the day, we took the ferry back to the main island and continued our journey home. The sky was turning orange as the sun began to set behind the hills. I leaned against the window, feeling tired but very happy. The trip to Lake Toba became one of the most memorable experiences of my seventh-grade year. Not only did I get to see beautiful views, but I also learned about the culture of Samosir Island and spent precious time with my family. When we finally reached home, I realized that traveling together made us closer and created memories that I would cherish forever. I promised myself that one day, I would return to Lake Toba and explore even more of its beauty.
